前言

弟兄姊妹，在新約聖經中，特別是在書信當中，我們會看到有一個字常常出現。這個字就是“忍耐”。的確，“忍耐”是我們需要學習的功課。

現在我們來作一次關於 “忍耐”的 “字義研究”(Word Study)。(筆者曾在 “華人雲端基督教會”(gloryw.org) 上發表過 2 篇有關於 “字義研究”的文章，它們分別是 “字義研究介紹”和 “聖經中的人名”。弟兄姊妹如有興趣可上網查看。)

小結

“忍耐”這個字有 “名詞”用法 (Patience)，也有 “形容詞” 用法(Patient)。所以在 “字義研究”當中，這兩個字我們都必須考慮。

“忍耐”(Patience) (名詞)  這個字在聖經當中出現 17   次。其中 15 次出現在新約。而“忍耐”(Patient) (形容詞)  這個字在聖經當中出現 19   次。其中也是 15 次出現在新約。

所以總結來說，“忍耐”這個字在聖經當中共出現 36 次之多，而其中 30 次出現在新約。換句話說，在這 36 句經文當中，每一句都有用“忍耐”這個字 (中文)，而每一句相對英文也都有用 Patience  或是 Patient這個字 (英文)。為節省篇幅，以下我們只舉 5 個例子。

經文

羅馬9: 22倘若神要顯明他的忿怒，彰顯他的權能，就多多 “忍耐”寬容那可怒豫備遭毀滅的器皿。

加拉太 5: 22聖靈所結的果子、就是仁愛、喜樂、和平、 “忍耐”、恩慈、良善、信實、

4:2務要傳道．無論得時不得時、總要專心、並用百般的 “忍耐”、各樣的教訓、責備人、警戒人、勸勉人。

4:2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with great patience and careful instruction.

小結

但是在英文翻譯的聖經當中，有一個類似字也被用到。它就是 “堅忍”。 “堅忍”這個字和 “忍耐” 這個字是類似，但是卻不完全相同。“堅忍”這個字是 Perseverance   (名詞)   或是 Persevere   (動詞)。在NIV英文聖經中，這個字出現了 14 次。請看以下經文 (中英對照)。

經文

希伯來10: 36；12: 1

10:36你們必須 “忍耐”，使你們行完了神的旨意，就可以得著所應許的。

12:1我們既有這許多的見證人，如同雲彩圍著我們。就當放下各樣的重擔，脫去容易纏累我們的罪，存心“忍耐”，奔那擺在我們前頭的路程。

12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

羅馬5: 3, 4

5:3不但如此，就是在患難中，也是歡歡喜喜的。因為知道患難生“忍耐”。

5:4 “忍耐”生老練。老練生盼望。

5:3 Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;

5:4 perseverance, character; and character, hope.

林後 12: 12

12:12我在你們中間，用百般的“忍耐”，藉著神蹟奇事異能，顯出使徒的憑據來。

帖後 1: 4; 3: 5

1:4甚至我們在神的各教會裡為你們誇口，都因你們在所受的一切逼迫患難中，仍舊存“忍耐”和信心。

1:4 Therefore, among God's churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.

3:5願主引導你們的心，叫你們愛神並學基督的 “忍耐”。

3:5 May the Lord direct your hearts into God's love and Christ's perseverance.

雅各1: 3, 4; 5: 11

1:3因為知道你們的信心經過試驗，就生“忍耐”。

1:4但 “忍耐”也當成功。使你們成全完備，毫無缺欠。

1:3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Jas 1:4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

5:11那先前“忍耐”的人，我們稱他們是有福的。你們聽見過約伯的 “忍耐”，也知道主給他的結局。明顯主是滿心憐憫，大有慈悲。

<st1:time hour="17" minute="11" w:st="on">5:11</st1:time> As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

彼後 1: 5，6

1:4因此他已將又寶貴又極大的應許賜給我們，叫我們既脫離世上從情慾來的敗壞，就得與神的性情有分。

1:5正因這緣故，你們要分外的殷勤。有了信心，又要加上德行。有了德行，又要加上知識。

1:6有了知識，又要加上節制。有了節制，又要加上 “忍耐”。有了 “忍耐”，又要加上虔敬。

1:4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

1:5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;

1:6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;

啟示 2: 2, 19

2:2我知道你的行為、勞碌、“忍耐”，也知道你不能容忍惡人。你也曾試驗那自稱為使徒卻不是使徒的，看出他們是假的來。

2:2 I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you

cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.

2:19我知道你的行為、愛心、信心、勤勞、“忍耐”。又知道你末後所行的善事，比起初所行的更多。

2:19 I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.

小結

弟兄姊妹，當我們看完這些經文後，有一個問題來了。因為經過仔細對照，我們發覺，在這 14 句經文當中，雖然 NIV 都用 Perseverance 或是 Persevere這個字，但是在和合本當中卻仍然用“忍耐”這個字 (中文) 。

換句話說，就是在和合本當中有一些用 “忍耐”表達的經文，在英文聖經 (NIV) 當中，卻不是用 Patience (忍耐) 這個字來表達，而是用Perseverance   (堅忍) 這個字來表達！

中文聖經翻譯

也許有人會說，華人看中文聖經，沒有什麼不對。所以接下來我們要來討論 “聖經”“翻譯”的一些問題。

弟兄姊妹，我們知道 “舊約原文”是用 “希伯來文”寫的。而 “新約原文”是用 “希臘文”寫的。所以我們現在所唸的聖經都是由 “原文”“翻譯”過來的。

我們知道，希伯來文，希臘文，和英文都是以 “字毋拼排”的方法來表達字意的。我們也知道中文文字是由 “象形文字”進化來的。因為如此，中文的文法，跟聖經原文的文法，有相當的不同。

中文的用字，很多時候，必須要用形容詞來補助。舉一個簡單例子。英文說，good，better，best。但是中文必須說，好，更好，最好。所以英文一個單子 (Better)，中文必須用兩個字 (更好) 來表達。

而且相對於中文，希臘文和英文的表達比較準確 (Precise)。原因是，英文 “名詞”有 “單”字和 “復”字的分別。而英文的 “動詞”有 “現在式”，“過去式”和 “未來式”的不同。而且在每種時式當中，它可以有 “進行式”，和 “完成式”。例如， “現在進行式”和 “現在完成式”。等等。

所以，從 “宏觀”上來講，我們認為英文版的聖經，比起中文版聖經，在字義的表達上比較準確 (Precise)。而且也比較一致 (Consistent) 。所以我們認為，對於不熟悉原文的弟兄姊妹，英文版聖經應該是一個很好的參考的聖經。

這是中文和英文語言上的不同，沒有誰對誰錯的問題。(對於“和合本”聖經，我們承認它對於華人基督教的信仰有極大貢獻。而且到目前仍然是必需參考的聖経。)

結語

1.   弟兄姊妹，因為中英文聖經翻譯的不同，以至於在 “字義研究”上有可能會產生不同的解釋。(前面題過，筆者曾在 “華人雲端基督教會”(gloryw.org) 上發表過 2 篇有關於 “字義研究”的文章。弟兄姊妹如有興趣可上網查看。)

2.   經過 “字義研究”，我們可以說, “忍耐”(Patience) 和  “堅忍”(Perseverance)  在聖經上的意義是不同的。

3.   “忍耐” (Patience)   這個字在合和本上出現至少 50 次。但是在 NIV  英文聖經中，Patience  這個字只出現  36  次。在其它  14 節經文中，它用的字是 Perseverance。
